Its been 1 years I've been using hostgator hosting, and this is the best web hosting ever.
I've no of websites and I only satisfied with hostgator service, ever. They have the best support too. I just upgraded my plan to business, and continue it for another 2 years.

Firstly: Necroposting. Fun.
Secondly: For those who just read John Thomson's comment; Hostgator does offer custom .htaccess files without issue. So far in my experience their customer service has been outstanding, the hardware is reliable, and the features are great. I can't speak as to their scalability yet, however given everything else I would expect it to be top notch.

Hostgator is a very reliable and affordable web hosting provider. Their support is very good and always helpful. To be honest their unlimited web hosting plans may discourage a webmaster to join with them, as most, if not all, web hosting companies that offer packages with unlimited resources are crappie and with bad support and quality of service. Hostgator is one of the very few reputable companies that offer unlimited hosting with great success. As every gigantic company it has its flaws and drawbacks. I host my personally website about <a href="http://www.webhostingart.com">web hosting</a> with them and I don’t had any issues until now. The most important drawback is that when I hosted my wordpess website with them, they didn’t offered the option to configure individually htaccess files, so I didn’t had search engine friendly urls for a long time.

I recently started a host gator account.

I asked host gator to transfer my existing website to them.

In the meantime, I registered a new domain name. I wanted to upload wordpress to the new domain name. I uploaded it to the public html file. Should I unistall the wordpress files from the public html folder and reinstall them to the newdomain file.

Keep in mind that hostgator was working on transferring my existing website?

Yep, in my experience, DreamHost is a lot more scalable for high traffic. A recent Olympics athlete had their blog on Dreamhost and during the Olympics it got hundredes of thousands of hits. Dreamhost didn't have to do anything special and it was live the entire time.

Here's some coupon codes for DH: http://tristantom.com/123/dreamhost-coupon-code/

I also use Hostgator and host multiple domains on my account. It's a pretty good hosting company, but if you get a sudden burst of traffic (from social media sites), then they are pretty quick to take your site down because it's causing "too much of a load on their servers".

If you do use HostGator for your (Wordpress) blogs... be sure to install a Wordpress Plug-in called <a href="http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-cache/" rel="nofollow">WP-Cache</a>. There are other Cache-like programs you can download, this is just the one that I use for my blogs.
